This piece is from several years ago but I find myself revisiting the idea of stitching paper and fabric together. In this case I incorporated a zipper and pieces of a torn up Virginia Woolf book that happened to be on my work table. Stitching on paper is surprisingly less delicate than one would think. I have gotten so that I rarely tear the paper. Sometimes, if I use a needle that is too large, it will leave undesired holes and of course if I end up removing the stitches for some reason, the holes remain. Paper is not so forgiving as fabric. But it is more resilient than one would think. Sometimes I use methylcellulose and PVA to strengthen it, or Kakishibu, which adds strength as well as a beautiful red/brown color.
Vestiges II by Christine Shannon Aaron, 2018
I love map-like quality of this piece by Christine Shannon Aaron. She burns the paper then embroiders.
